This fabulous recipe is courtesy of Sunrise Apples in Gays Mills, WI. To my knowledge thay are still the largest orchard in the state, and the family that owns it is wonderful.

I haven’t made this in a while, but trust me that it is yummy. It is definitely that time of the year to bring on apple recipes. 🙂

Spicy Apple Squares
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup sifted flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 cup finely diced and peeled apples
1 teaspoon baking powder

Cream together brown sugar and butter until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Add nuts and apples. Spread in well greased and floured 8×8 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until done. Do not over bake. Cut into squares. Before serving dust with confectioners’ sugar.
